IMF slashes economic growth forecast for South Africa

TVC E, BUSINESS - The International Monetary Fund, IMF has cut its economic growth forecast for South Africa by almost half to less than 1 percent, as commodity prices slump and global demand remains weak. Gross domestic product in Africa’s most industrialized nation will probably expand 0.7 percent this year, compared with October's estimate of 1.3 percent. IMF said in an update to its World Economic Outlook report on Tuesday, that it is cutting its projection for next year by 0.3 percentage points to 1.8 percent. South Africa’s economy is struggling to cope with a plunge in metal prices, heightened by a slowdown in its biggest export market, China. Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan is set to announce new growth forecasts in his budget speech next month....

Islamic State magazine confirms Jihadi John’s death

TVC E, WORLD NEWS - A media outlet associated with Islamic State has confirmed the death of "Jihadi John." The Islamic State's Dabiq magazine released an eulogy to the militant who won global notoriety for his filmed executions of hostages on Tuesday. The monitoring organisation SITE reported that "Jihadi John," identified as Mohammed Emwazi, was described in the magazine by his nickname in the group of "Abu Muharib al-Muhajir." The U.S. military said in November it was "reasonably certain" it had killed him in a drone strike. Emwazi is a British citizen of Arab origin....

South Africa’s DA leader vows to expunge racists from party

TVC E, WORLD NEWS - The first black leader of South Africa's main opposition party, has vowed to root out racist members, in the Democratic Alliance. He adds that the country is "being torn apart" by renewed racial tension 22 years after apartheid. Maimane last year took over leadership of the DA, which has long been seen as a "white" party, and will face his first major test at municipal elections due between May and August. Corrupt judges should be punished – SERAP

TVC E, POLITICS - The Socio Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has released a report insisting that corrupt Judges in Nigeria should no longer be allowed to escape justice. At the launch of the report tagged, "Go and sin no more: Corrupt Judges escaping from Justice in Nigeria" in Lagos, cases of judicial corruption and the impunity of corrupt judges in the country were highlighted. The president of SERAP, Adetokunbo Mumuni said judges should not be allowed to avoid accountability for corruption, if judicial impartiality and independence is to be held sacrosanct and access to justice effectively achieved. He added that lack of judicial accountability for corruption has impeded efforts to fight the scourge at the highest level of government.  ...

Court grants Metuh 400 million Naira bail

TVC E, POLITICS - The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted the National Publicity Secretary of Nigeria's main opposition party PDP, Olisa Metuh, bail to the tune of four hundred million Naira. The spokesman who spent his weekend in Kuje prison must have two sureties who have landed properties in Maitama, abuja. They are to present a three-year tax clearance, two passport photographs and an affidavit of their means. Metuh is also to deposit his international passport while his Application for bail on self recognition, was refused. The court ordered the EFCC to ensure the landed properties at maitama, are genuine. The case was adjourned to January the 25th, 2016 for trial....

Reactions as Okorocha sacks 3,000 civil servants

TVC NEWS, OWERRI -  Reactions have started trailing after the sack of and the organized labour in Imo State have directed all workers affected by the recent sack order to report to their places of work and close at the approved time. Chief Rochas Okorocha, Imo State governor sacked over 3,000 workers in 19 parastatals, agencies and departments, and he stopped their salaries since January 4, 2016. Imo Water Corporation, Imo Cattle Market, Imo Sports Council, Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission (ENTRACO), Imo Marketing Company, Imo Consumer Protection Council, Hospital Management Board, and its headquarters staff are those included in the sack-web. The reason behind the sack followed the months of probe that showed that the workers were not contributing any meaningful thing to the growth of the state. 15 ex-governors and 40 others stole N1.34tn in eight years –FG

The Federal Government has alleged that 55 former public officials stole N1.34tn from public treasury in eight years. Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, made the allegation at a press conference in Abuja although he did not disclose their identity. He only categorized them as former state governors, ex-ministers, former legislators, civil servants, bankers and other businessmen. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offenses Commission have been intensely involved in one investigation or the other since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015. Mohammed said, "The situation is dire and the time to act is now. Between 2006 and 2013, just 55 people allegedly stole a total of N1.34tn in Nigeria and that’s more than a quarter of last year’s national budget." Metuh brought to court in handcuffs

TVC NEWS: Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olisa Metuh, was handcuffed to the federal high court in Abuja on today Tuesday 19th Jnuary 2016. The PDP spokesman, who was remanded in Kuje prison on Friday, was guarded by officials of the Nigerian prisons service, and was brought to the court venue in a Black Maria Vehicle. Kenya Power launches Telegram Bot

Kenya's National Electric Utility Company has launched Telegram Bot to assist customers with their accounts. The Kenya Power Telegram Bot is a cloud-based instant messaging service. The purpose of the bot is to assist customers with issues relating to their prepaid or postpaid accounts and help them check statements, delayed tokens and bills.   Telegram Bots were launched last year. They are simply Telegram accounts operated by software, not people and they often have Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. The bots can do anything – teach, play, search broadcast, remind, connect, integrate with other services or even pass commands to the Internet of Things (IoT).   The Telegram app is now available as a free download on the Google Play Store, Apple Store, and Windows Store.  ...
