Lasun elected ECOWAS parliament deputy speaker

TVC E, POLITICS - The ECOWAS Parliament on Friday elected Nigeria's House of Representatives' deputy speaker, Hon. Yusuf Lasun as one of its deputy speakers. Other deputy speakers elected are from Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia and Cape Verde in line with the rules of procedures of the parliament. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the election was held during the inaugural session of the of the fourth legislature of the parliament in Abuja. The election followed the end of the four-year mandate of the third legislature which ended in August 2015 in line with the provisions of the Supplementary Protocol relating to the Parliament. The four deputy speakers are: Yusuf Lasun from Nigeria, First Deputy Speaker; Aminata Toungare from Cote d’Ivoire, Second Deputy Speaker. Nigerians may starve to death by 2050 – Audu Ogbeh

 TVC E. The Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, has warned that Nigeria should increase input in farming or risk facing her citizens starve to death by 2050. Ogbeh said this during the defence of the Ministry of Agriculture's 2016 budget before the senate committee on Agriculture yesterday February 4th. "We have written to state governments to encourage them to develop dams and canals so that agriculture becomes an all year round activity and it is not confined to the rainy season alone. Besides, by 2050, Nigeria population will be very close to 500 million at the current rate of growth. This is just 34 years from now. If we carry on at the current rate of one crop per year, with very low mechanization, Nigerians run the risk of starving to death”...

Raymond Dopkesi apologises to Tinubu over documentary

Chief Raymond Dokpesi of DAAR Communications has tendered an apology to the All Progressive Congress national (APC) leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu over a documentary aired against him on African Independent Television (AIT) titled, "Lion of Bourdillon". Tinubu who had filed a N150 billion suit before the court against Daar Communications Plc for airing the documentary‎, has also withdrawn the suit after the relevant parties settled the matter out of court. ‘I miss my terrorist husband’ says girl rescued from Boko Haram

16-year old Zara John who was rescued from the Boko Haram sect nearly a year now says she misses her terrorist husband and is still in love with him. Zara John was 14 years old when the Boko Haram militants fighting to establish an Islamist state raided her village- Izge, in northeast Nigeria, in February 2014. At the time, two of her brothers were out of town. The militants raided homes, bombed places of worship and markets, slaughtered men, and loaded women, girls including children into trucks. Zara's mother fell off one of the overloaded trucks but tried to chase after the vehicle that was ferrying away her only daughter and her four-year-old son but was unable to keep up as the truck headed 22 km (14 miles) road journey to Bita. Supreme Court dismisses Saraki’s appeal over CCT trial

TVC E, POLITICS - The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal of Senate President Bukola Saraki against his trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Saraki took the matter to the apex court after the Court of Appeal ruled that the CCT was right to try him on a 13 count charge of false assets declaration. The Supreme Court on Friday, dismissed his appeal against the Court of Appeal's verdict in a unanimous decision read by Justice Samuel Walter Onnoghen. Why we sanction telecoms operators –NCC

TVC E, BUSINESS - The Nigerian Communications Commission uses sanctions to ensure that telecommunications operators comply with regulations, guidelines and directives. The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, spoke at the first Annual Conference on Combatting Financial Fraud, Cyber crime and other Cross-border Crimes in Abuja. He said, "in any environment where investment, innovation and issues of competition were rooted, there is bound to be contraventions, thus it is necessary to issue sanctions and enforce compliance". The NCC dutifully employs sanctions and enforcement mechanisms to regulate the industry. The Nigerian Communications Act mandated the NCC to enforce compliance by any means lawful in the event of contravention of the Act, or any of its regulations, guidelines or the terms and conditions of an issued licence or direction.
