US Church holds Beyonce mass
A San Francisco church, Grace Cathedral, held a mass on Wednesday honoring pop star,Beyonce and the turn out was massive.
People literally went to church to worship Queen B and the service had the opening hymn – Survivor which is a song from band group, Destiny Child.
The service also included bible readings, communion, prayers and more songs by the singer. The mass was conducted by Black feminist theologian, Reverend Yolanda Norton. She revealed the service was one not to worship Beyonce.
“This is a service that uses Beyoncé’s music as a tool to engender positive, empowering conversation about black women. The premise of [the class] is that if we look at the personal life, career trajectory, music and public persona of
Beyoncé, so much of her life reflects aspects of black women’s stories”
According to her, sometimes you have to “sing your song your way.” In essence you do whatever you want to do in the way that best suits you regardless of what it takes.
The mass was a way of creating room for the deserved recognition the Black women failed to get. Grace cathedral added on its church website that the service was conducted to show the significance of Beyonce’s performance and how it ‘opens a window into the lives of the marginalised and forgotten, particularly Black Women’.
