Tension in Edo state, candidates sign peace pact

The election candidates of the gubernatorial election set to hold in Edo state on Saturday, September 10, have been made to sign a peace pact to ensure that the elections go hitch free. It was reported that all those who signed the pact were the All Progressives Congress (APC), contestant, Godwin Obaseki, and his counterpart from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Pst Ize-Iyamu. A tweet by the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, says the event was coordinated by the commission’s Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. Below are more photos from the peace pact signing. However, two major security agencies have asked that the Edo State governorship election set for Saturday be postponed. The Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service gave this advice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday. APC chieftains at war with Buhari

Wike is a threat to democracy in Rivers – Amaechi

Transportation Minister Amaechi has described Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike as a threat to democracy and free and fair elections in the state. Amaechi, the immediate past governor of the state, cited the re-run in his Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) which he said was inconclusive “because thugs sent by Wike violently disrupted the collation of votes for the LGA.” He was reacting to allegations by Wike in THISDAY yesterday in which the governor claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was plotting to release some of the results in the eight local government areas in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC). ‘No collation of results in Ikwerre,’ official says

TVC E, POLITICS - Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Saturday survived heavy gun attacks in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, a collation officer, Allwell Egeonu, has said. According to Egeonu, a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, said the attack started at about 7:30 pm when collation was about to start in Isiokpo, headquarters of Ikwerre Local Government area. “It took over 30 minutes shooting,” he said in a video interview where he described the attack. “We are lucky to have returned alive.” Ikwere is the home local government of Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
