Nigeria’s youngest Police IG, Sunday Adewusi, dies

TVC E The Force Public Relations Officer, Bisi Kolawole, confirmed that the Former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Adewusi, died last night at the National Hospital at about 9pm after a brief illness at the age of 80. At age 45, he was appointed IG in 1981 to take over from Adamu Suleiman, thereby making him the youngest officer to head the country’s police force. Mr. Adewusi was, however, succeeded by Etim Inyang in 1983, barely two years after his promotion. He was promoted Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1959; Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1962; Superintendent of Police in 1963; Chief Superintendent of Police in 1967. He became Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1969 and Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1971. At age 32, he became a Commissioner of Police in 1972 and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in 1975.
