House of Reps orders IG to seal Kogi Assembly again

The House of Representatives has again directed the Inspector-General of Police to seal the Kogi State House of Assembly complex until the crisis rocking it is resolved. The legislators have also declared the directive given by the Attorney General of the Federation to the IGP to re-open the Assembly premises as a contravention of the Nigerian Constitution They have subsequently directed that the Justice Minister, Abubakar Danlami be reprimanded for standing against the law. Danlami was advised to withdraw his advice to the IGP with immediate effect. These resolutions were taken after the House adopted the four recommendations of its ad-hoc committee which investigated reasons behind the non compliance with its directive to the Police Chief to shut the Assembly complex in the wake of the crisis between two factions of the state legislators....

Kogi assembly defy NASS, convene sitting

TVC E, POLITICS - Embattled Kogi State House of Assembly may be heading for a clash with the National Assembly, as seven members loyal to factional speaker, Umar Imam, convened sitting on Tuesday, against the directive of both the upper and lower national chambers. It would be recalled that the Senate last had week endorsed the order of the House of Representatives, which ordered the closure of the Kogi Assembly as well as taking over its function, following the protracted leadership crisis rocking the state assembly. The Senate also ordered the Inspector General of Police to enforce its order on the closure of the assembly complex. Factional speaker, Imam, however took his seat at exactly 12noon, and quickly commenced proceedings. He however noted that the house has not formed a quorum and asked that members present allow for others to take their seats before proceeding. Having waited for a brief moment, without the desires quorum, he adjourned sitting...

Rancour in Kogi Assembly over choice of new Speaker

[caption id="attachment_9507" align="alignleft" width="300"] Kogi State House of Assembly[/caption] The Kogi State House of Assembly has been plunged deep into controversy over who takes over as the speaker from the  incumbent Momoh Jimoh Lawal . The incumbent speaker Momoh Jimoh Lawal is expected to step down from office as he is from the same Senatorial District as the Governor which is against the House rule. Consequently, the house which was  scheduled to resume sitting last week could not. It was gathered that the People’s Democratic Party which is in majority were absent on both occasions leaving the house with only seven member far below the  the number that should have formed the quorum for sitting. Sources close to the Assembly said that the National Secretariat of the People’ s Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday summoned members in the state House of Assembly to Abuja for an emergency meeting....
