Versatile artiste, Yinka Davies wants more awareness for Lassa Fever and Environmental Hygiene Sensitization for young Nigerians. Yinka was among top Nigerian artistes who graced the screening of a documentary on Lassa Fever and environmental hygiene. A round-table discussion on how Nollywood could be helpful in creating awareness on environmental hygiene was also discussed. South Africa confirms first case of Zika virus

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the virus, which is causing international alarm after spreading through much of the Americas, was detected in the man on his visit to Johannesburg. "The businessman presented with fever and a rash approximately four days after arrival in South Africa but is now fully recovered," he said. It would be recalled that the World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a global public health emergency on Feb. 1, noting its association with two neurological disorders - microcephaly in babies and Guillain-Barre syndrome that can cause paralysis.  ...

Lassa fever: Death toll hits 101

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) statistics showed that reported cases of the hemorrhagic disease — confirmed and suspected — stood at 175 with a total of 101 deaths since August. “As at today, 19 (including Abuja) states are currently following up contacts or have suspected cases with laboratory results pending or laboratory confirmed cases,” the NCDC said in a statement. Deaths from the virus were recorded in the nation’s political capital, Abuja, Lagos and 14 other states, the NCDC said. Although the federal ministry of health had said the virus had been brought under control, there are fears the actual scale of the outbreak is under-reported....

Lassa fever kills nine people in Benin

TVC E, NEWS - At least nine people have been suspected to have died of Lassa fever in Benin republic just as the world ramps up its fight against the Zika virus, a health official told AFP Tuesday. "Right now, there are a total of 20 suspected cases with nine deaths," government health official Orou Bagou Yorou Chabi said. Sources disclosed that the first Lassa fever case in the West African country of 10 million people was listed at the Hospital of St Martin de Papane, in Tchaourou, a city 350 km north of Cotonou, the United Nations children agency UNICEF said in a statement. UNICEF says the Lassa fever outbreaks has killed about 84 people in neighbouring Nigeria out of 168 suspected cases and Stocks of Ribavirin, a drug used to treat the infection, were being shipped to Tchaourou and Cotonou. Benin was last hit by a Lassa fever outbreak in October 2014,...
